St.-Ignatius-Convent-Higher-Secondary-School

St. Ignatius Convent Higher Secondary School was founded in 1921 by Mother Marie Louise de Meester, a Belgian missionary sister. This pioneering institution was established to address the critical need for girls’ education in the Tirunelveli region before India’s independence. When the school first opened its doors, it had only three students, but has since grown into a thriving educational institution serving nearly 4,000-7,000 students.

Mother Marie Louise de Meester (born April 8, 1857, in Roeselare, Belgium) was a dedicated teacher whose desire to help the poor led her to join the Canonesses Regular of St. Augustine in 1881. In 1897, feeling called to a mission in Mulagumudu, India, she set sail with a companion to take charge of an orphanage. They arrived on November 7, 1897, only to discover that the priest who invited them had died. Despite a lack of local support, Mother Marie Louise and her companion courageously took over the orphanage and began caring for the children.

The ICM Congregation and Educational Mission

In 1897, Mother Marie Louise established a new religious institute called the Missionary Canonesses of St. Augustine in Mulagumudu, which later became known as the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (ICM). The congregation was founded with the mission to serve orphans, abandoned children, and the less privileged, particularly focusing on education and women’s empowerment. The ICM congregation’s educational ministry expanded rapidly across India and internationally. From India, mission houses were established in the Philippines (1910), the West Indies (1914), the United States (1919), Congo (1920), and China (1923). Mother Marie Louise continued her missionary work until her death on October 10, 1928, in Heverlee, Belgium, at the age of 71.

Establishment in Palayamkottai

In 1921, Mother Marie Louise reached Palayamkottai and laid the foundation for the school and convent. This was during a challenging period marked by World War II, when she struggled to secure support from Belgium to feed the children. According to historical accounts, she prayed to God and collected dry leaves from trees to prepare porridge for the starving children, with the sisters sharing the same humble food.
